The Colon Theater is considered one of the five great lyric theaters in the world. Due to its history, beauty, size and history, this emblem of Buenos Aires continues to amaze all those art lovers who have visited it since its opening more than a hundred years ago.
This monumental theater was not always located on the famous Avenida 9 de Julio, initially “El Colón”, as it is known among the Buenos Aires, was located Plaza de Mayo. There he began his story in 1857 and in 1908 he moved to his new building, a much larger and more splendid one, the one we know today. The construction of the building that we see today has been around for 20 years, although it was expected to last only four, but an economic crisis delayed its inauguration, something common that would be repeated in the country’s history.
Its architecture has an eclectic style, which combines Italian neo-Renaissance and French baroque, its central hall, one of the largest in the world, has a rich decoration in gold and scarlet. It is divided into seven levels and has a capacity for 2487 seated spectators and reaches 3000 if we include spaces for standing spectators.
And despite the luxury of this theater, it is not only intended for elites, but for everyone, and in its last floors of the room are the “low cost” corners of the theater: the casserole, the gathering, the gallery and paradise, places without seats where the humblest workers could access this theater for a few coins and appreciate their favorite artists.
The Colón Theater has exceptional acoustics, a quality recognized worldwide as one of the most perfect and where you can best appreciate classical opera. In its main hall there is a pit for the orchestra, which has a capacity for 120 musicians who can play simultaneously. The entire room is designed with resonance chambers and special curves for sound reflection.
To make its acoustics more magical, its flirtatious central dome hides a secret. Within it there is a space that allows to house a group of musicians and from there generate different sound effects or the celestial voices of some operas; a kind of sensurround effect of the last century.
Undoubtedly one of the best ways to enjoy all the beauty of this theater is to live in the first person is to attend a function in its main hall. Whether it’s an opera, a concert of its symphony or a famous ballet, the Colon Theater offers a large number of different shows throughout the year.
Practically every day there are functions, since and there is a wide variety of prices for each of its functions and it depends a lot on the location we choose and even free shows are usually offered, where it is only necessary to book the ticket to attend the ticket office to attend.
