Visit this picturesque town located just 20 minutes from Amsterdam, which has six historic mills next to each other. They are all windmills in operation and have different uses. Huisman’s is a mustard mill and you can visit it for free. The entrance to the rest of windmills in general costs only € 4, and the most prominent is probably Het Jonge Schaap (the young sheep), which is one of the sawmills that helped the Dutch to be great masters on the high seas in the XVII century.
Enter and discover the large serrated saw blades planning perpendicular to the ground and how the wood is introduced. One of the kind volunteers will be more than willing to give you an explanation of how the Dutch managed to reduce the time it took to build a ship from three months to three weeks with this ingenious innovation.
Also in Zaanse Schan you can see about 35 historic houses, a couple of small museums and old craft shops: one that sells traditional candies and another that demonstrates the manufacture of clogs every ten minutes.
The tour lasts three hours and there will be a guide on board the bus to explain the characteristics of the terrain and a summary of the local history. After this you can discover Zaanse Schans at your own pace.
Do you feel you could use a little more adventure before the end of the day? Try to fly over Holland in the 5D flight simulator of THIS IS HOLLAND and enjoy the best views of the whole country in this fun attraction. If you are looking for something more relaxing, choose to add a cruise on the canals of Amsterdam, which are listed on the UNESCO heritage list.
