The Prado collection has more than 7,000 paintings (although only 1,500 are displayed at the same time). All offer a penetrating insight into the celebrated history of European art.
The collection includes a large number of paintings by the protagonist of the Spanish Golden Age: Velázquez. It also has many of the dark and gloomy works of Goya, who is considered one of the most important Spanish artists of this time.
Although not everything is Spanish art: the Prado has works by a series of Flemish artists: Rubens, Bruegel and Van Dyck are well represented. The collection also includes the remarkable work The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch (Bosco), probably the best-known triptych in the world.
