At the end of the 18th century, Paris had a serious problem. Its city center cemeteries were completely overcrowded, causing horrible epidemics and annoying people who didn’t like stepping on decomposing corpses when they went to buy a baguette.
After an unfortunate incident in which the Holy Innocents Cemetery literally blew up in someone’s basement, the Parisian government decided it was time to do something.
Under cover of darkness, workers carried human remains from all Paris cemeteries to the Tombe-Issoire quarry. Today, more than six million corpses lie there in relative peace. To give you an idea: it is almost three times the current population of Paris!
Now you can go to the epicenter of this deadly story and explore the corridors with skulls stacked on its walls. Plus, with the multilingual audio guide, you can learn everything about this secret part of Parisian history.
Do not queue, show your digital ticket at the entrance and collect your audio guide.
