The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum was founded to promote knowledge through art, science and education. Mission accomplished! Meticulously designed with a gorgeous garden, the museum houses Calouste Gulbenkian’s private collection in one building, as well as the world’s largest collection of Portuguese contemporary art in a second building. A delight for art lovers.
Within the elegant walls of the museum you can experience thousands of years of art, from ancient times to the present, and all organized chronologically. You will start with the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, passing through Mesopotamia, the Middle East, Armenia and the Far East.
The stations with tactile information will explain the history and context while giving you the necessary space so that you can explore at your own pace.
When you’re done with the paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and furniture, take some time out for a walk in the garden! Designed in harmony with the building’s architecture, these meandering pathways and gorgeous water fountains are the perfect place for a little intellectual contemplation.
