Visit Sachsenhausen:

Visit the sachsenhausen concentration camp, where more than 200,000 people were imprisoned by the Nazis and about 50,000 were brutally killed. Sachsenhausen was initially used to imprison political opponents. Later, once certain groups had been defined as racially or biologically inferior, the camp was used as a training ground for SS officers during the Holocaust.
Being the first concentration camp built under Himmler’s direction once declared head of the German police, Sachsenhausen was conceived as a ‘model’ of structure for other camps. We explain how the Nazi architects designed the gardens and buildings in order to put the prisoners under the absolute power of the SS.
Our guides will tell you the realities of life and death in this field: the prisoners were victims of famine, disease, forced labor and systematic extermination. They will visit the punishment cells, the execution areas and the crematorium, the Pathology Laboratory and the Hospital, and the ‘hole’ in which the victims were thrown into – their simple rot.
Learn from the stories of courage in the midst of horror, such as when the British Royal Marine Commandos were forced to test the German army team, and hear about the fate of notable prisoners, such as Stalin’s son, and the use of “marches of death “to kill the survivors before the Soviet liberation.
We will also explain in detail the life and death in Special Field No. 7/1, the name by which it was known after Sachsenhausen passed under the direction of the Soviets. Until its closure in 1950, more than 60,000 men were held captive here, most of them former Nacis officials, German prisoners of war and Soviet deserters. Some 12,000 inmates died of hunger, cold and illness under the Soviets.
